  • Copy-editing: work done on a text as written by the author, before it is formally typeset. As well as the obvious checking, and if necessary amendment, of spelling, punctuation and grammar, it involves checking for correct and complete page numbering, running heads, contents list, headings style, and any other matters needed to meet the style required by the publisher (or author, in the case of self-publishing). Minor rewriting is part of a copy-editor's job, as is liaison with the author and/or publisher if anything is unclear.

  • Proofreading: a last check on the text after the material has been typeset and before it is finally published. This stage will check that the copy-editor's instructions have been carried out, that no new errors have been introduced during typesetting and that nothing has been missed.

  • Work can be done either electronically on computer, or on paper (hard copy). Charges for computer work are normally slightly higher.

  • I am familiar with American spelling, punctuation and general style; and I am also experienced in working for non-native English speakers.

  • Required deadlines are invariably met. If I think I cannot complete on time, I will not take on the job – although in practice I rarely turn work down.

  • Charges are reasonable and vary with the nature and size of the job, but are to some extent negotiable. I usually charge by the hour, but by number of words or a rate for the whole job can also be arranged. There is a minimum charge of one hour. Payment is normally expected within 30 days following completion, unless by prior arrangement.
